Growing up...

The other day as I watched my kids play, I noticed something that gave me pause. I observed how particular and specific Anaïs is about everything right now. The words she chooses, the way she articulates them, the colours she likes, the clothes she puts on... everything is done with purpose and determination, and must be 'just so'!! I thought for a moment that Isabel was very much the same at that stage in her life, just a couple short years ago. And while she still has her preferences, the strength of each particular desire has faded just a little. Her intentions are not as forceful or dramatic as they were when she was two and three. It made me wonder whether this is the time that we develop this aspect of our personality, where we try to figure out what we like or do not like. Where we hold on to specific ideas about how something should be as we learn our preferences. And, then, if we are lucky, we outgrow this 'stickiness' and can enjoy life for what it brings, not for what we expect it to be.
As I moved through these thoughts, I reflected on my own nature... and how very, very particular I am about how things are in certain aspects of my life. And then I wondered... am i just stuck being two and three in these moments?
i guess i still have some growing up to do.
